I wish I could be a loud cheer-leader for the flagship autumn-season revival at Sheffield of Eugene O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms (1924). If nothing else, the talented director and design team of Sam Yates and Chiara Stephenson have risen to the challenge of the mid-19th-century New England setting. The thrust-stage has become a vast tract of dusty earth with a golden wheat-field in the distance and a mass of scudding cloud overhead. When further combined with candlelight and haunting violin strains, the effect is simply ravishing.
